Finance, an ally of biodiversity

Awareness and mobilization

The stakes are high. Many industries depend on ecosystem services, from agriculture to the textile industry. Finance is mobilized, as is a joint initiative Financing the Biodiversity Pledge, launched in 2020, which today brings together 89 signatories representing 13,000 billion euros in AUM. In this context, La Financière de l’Echiquier (LFDE) has undertaken to integrate biodiversity criteria into its analysis and measurement of impact
[1]
all its investments until 2024.

Responsible investors for over 30 years, from 2021 we publish traces of biodiversity of our fixed assets. A 1and a step to realize this still little-known climate risk and whose financial impact is important in the medium and long term. Our strategy for environmental transition has also recently been enriched by strengthening biodiversity criteria. We have strengthened our biodiversity criteria after working with our academic, scientific and financial stakeholders and integrated the 2 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to biodiversity, SDG 14 Water Life and SDG 15 Life on land. They are in addition to the SDGs already considered for climate, SDG 7 Clean and Affordable Energy and SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Solutions and support

We will not move to a carbon-neutral world that protects biodiversity overnight. That is why it is important to support solutions that are adapted to the needs of the real economy, as well as companies that are starting the transition.

The vocation of Echiquier Climate & Biodiversity Impact Europe
[2]
is to respond to the climate challenge and help protect biodiversity, in particular by supporting business. We seek to determine whether a company is dependent on and / or influencing biodiversity, in particular by assessing its roadmap and analyzing pressures on biodiversity (pollution, deforestation, etc.).

Our strategy is to select companies that offer specific solutions, such as AKER CARBON CAPTURE
[3]
, the Norwegian leader in CO2 capture, or CORBION, which, in particular, helps to overcome plastic pollution through alternative technologies. We also select pioneer companies with ambitious strategies, including in sectors that are under-represented or under-represented in most traditional funds. Their systemic impact affects their entire ecosystem.

Echiquier Climate & Biodiversity Impact Europe DNA is a support for companies that are important in protecting biodiversity. Through NESTE, for example, a Finnish refinery that has developed a renewable diesel fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional diesel fuel. Finally, we also provide support to companies that have just started the transition, in particular we identify common areas of progress that are monitored over time.

According to the World Economic Forum
[4]
50% of world GDP depends on biodiversity, rates are high, but there is still time to act.

The investor’s attention is drawn to the fact that investing in the strategy of influence does not create a direct impact on the environment and society, the strategy seeks to invest in companies that meet specific criteria of the strategy.
