Bernard Arnault: “Vocation and responsibility are inseparable in the houses of the LVMH group”, Company news

The professions of our houses are vocations. They find their roots in the call that we pass on from generation to generation. For this reason, responsibility is everywhere there. Vocation and responsibility, that is, in the literal sense, vocation and response in the homes of the LVMH group are inseparable.

It is in this long history of vocation that our company’s social responsibility is strengthened every day, and in two ways. Above all, the great heritage that we have inherited, the excellence that our houses claim for their products, means setting an example. Second, the global scale in which we conduct our business, the size and visibility that our group has achieved, entail obligations that we are fully aware of.

Contribute to the public good

Our social responsibility is primarily expressed in the economic footprint of the LVMH group, in particular in its contribution to the national community. The estimate for 2021 was made by the economist Nicolas Bouzou and his research company Astérès: the group represents a “direct, indirect, induced and chain” economic activity of 36.6 billion euros, as well as the tax revenue of this LVMH ecosystem in France. amount to a total of 5.4 billion euros, which means, for example, financing the schooling of approximately 400,000 children.

Another way to look at this contribution to society, and not least employment, is that Asteres estimates that the approximately 34,000 employees of the LVMH group in France have created 112,000 indirect jobs. They are also, on average, in the top 20% of earners. Even if the research was not conducted on a global scale, I am absolutely certain that the same could be said, and perhaps even more, about LVMH’s 175,000 employees worldwide. 3.4 indirect jobs depend on each of them, from which LVMH has made a commitment, clearly stated in the code of conduct for suppliers, to ensure that they receive a decent wage. In addition to the economic impact they exert, the vast majority of our employees contribute to the associative programs that LVMH supports and expands: in 2021, 765,000 people in need worldwide were helped through these activities.

These are two methods of objective and macroeconomic observation of the order of magnitude of our group’s contribution to our country and other territories where we are located. However, this picture does not fully explain our long-term dynamics, which are closely related to the vocation culture that prevails in our homes.

Pass on the vocation

Every year, several hundred students (at the beginning of the 2022 school year, there will be about 500 of them) join the ranks of the Institute of Professional Excellence in France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Japan, and now, thanks to Tiffany, the USA. The program we dedicate to them concentrates all the values we want to promote: the acquisition of traditional know-how, a culture of creativity, respectful integration into the environment and society.

By bringing their enthusiasm and desire to learn into our homes, they receive in return a legacy of mastery, long-term vision, a desire for continuous improvement, and the means to realize big creative ideas. The Institute for Professional Excellence is at the heart of the transfer ambition, which is also much wider, developed and coordinated by HR. Our employer brand, Craft the future, brings together all aspects of this expensive transmission for us.

So more than 100,000 people worldwide, including many young people in training, have already completed the Inside module, which allows them to better understand the group and our business.

I add to this the seriousness with which the group’s teams participate in online trainings on ethics and compliance or even sessions on intrapreneurship (Dare) or social impact initiatives (in particular on the Next platform, which allows the whole group of employees to bring new ideas or contribute to them).

This vocation to vocations naturally turns outward. The special days that gathered during 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2018 several hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world allowed the general public to better understand our houses, and I am glad to know that in addition to the most famous – Dior, Louis Vuitton, Guerlain, Chaumet, Hennessy, Dom Pérignon, among the 57 houses that will open their 96 sites to the public from October 14 to 16, will receive an exceptional influx of applications. Nothing can replace to convince the public of the beauty of our professions, as well as the sincerity of our ecological approach and the excellence of our social ambitions, the passion of several thousand craftsmen and building workers.

Similarly, the LVMH group aims to instill a sensitivity to craftsmanship from secondary school age. Thanks to the program “Great!” we meet high school students in France and Italy to introduce them to our professions and help them discover a form of self-realization that is very different from their schooling, but how complementary it is.

Answer the call

The last dimension of social responsibility that we want to demonstrate: we must be present when we are called. The alert line allows the entire LVMH group, regardless of country, to alert the group to a possible problem. The Heart Fund allows any employee to receive financial support from the group or psychological help when faced with an extraordinary life event. 2,500 employees have benefited from this, including recently all our employees in Ukraine.

Symmetrically, when the company calls, those present answer. When Notre Dame burned, we responded; when hospitals needed water-alcohol gel and gowns in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic, we responded; when a natural disaster, when war strikes a part of the world, we respond.

The association La Fabrique nomade, which allows refugee craftsmen to return to their profession and integrate as quickly as possible in the host country, receives our passionate support. We also support the association LIVE (L’Institut des Vocations pour l’Emploi) and the campuses it has opened in Clichy-sous-Bois, Valence and Roubaix.

It is impossible for me to list all the partnerships of the houses, there are many, with UNESCO, UNICEF, Save the Children, many foundations and charities on all continents. If the lives of citizens become better thanks to the activities of our group, if our monuments, our schools, our medical research institutes benefit from it, and if art spreads more deeply thanks to the Louis Vuitton Foundation, then LVMH will have fulfilled its role.

Calling, answering, waiting for a call – this is how the energy of our 175,000 employees around the world vibrates. I am proud to see this commitment radiated every day because I believe so deeply that it contributes to the highest good the world should pursue: peace.
